What is English Language Arts?
Yokosuka Middle School embraces Career and College Ready Standards which are divided into Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language. Our year will be divided into six separate collections. Each collection will involve reading Fiction, Nonfiction, and other genres of literature. A tentative overview of our year is this:
Unit 1: Introduction to Literary Terms; The Giver
Unit 2/Collection 2: The Thrill of Horror - October - various short stories (to include Edgar Allan Poe and The Monkey's Paw)
Unit 3 & 4/Collection 3 & 4: The Move Towards Freedom and Approaching Adulthood Winter 2019: Collaborative Global project with 9th Grade Lakenheath (England), Circle MS and Burleson HS in the US students
Writing focus: Research writing; using technology for publication and presentation
Unit 5/Collection 5: Anne Frank's Legacy using excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank and World War 2 Literature Circles; writing focus: Literature Reflection
Unit 6/Collection 6: The Value of Work: various short stories and poems; Speech; Team Mustin Culminating Collaborative Assignment
